本技術資料は、2007年に公開した「概要調査の調査・評価項目に関する技術資料-長期変動と地質環境の科学的知見と調査の進め方-」（産業技術研究所地質調査総合センター研究資料集　no.459）に引き続き、高レベル放射性廃棄物の地層処分事業における立地選定時の安全確保に関する知見を、天然バリアを対象としてとりまとめたものである。
